One of the most important things you can do these days is to promote your salon on social media. It’s low cost, fun and possibly the best way there is to attract new clients. The only thing is, this is a strategy you need to keep up with. It’s no good putting up a couple of posts when you realise the diary is looking empty. You’ll need to post consistently to build an audience. Here are a few of our tips to make sure your efforts get results.

Know your platform

The first step to using social media to get more clients is to choose which platform (or platforms) to use. They are all different and each has its conventions. For example, it’s normal to include hashtags as part of a sentence on twitter. Where putting them at the end would use too many characters. Do that on Instagram and it will look odd. The convention there is to put your hashtags at the end of a post, or even in the comments.

Know your customer

Who is your perfect customer? Are you aiming to attract business women experiencing hair loss? Or students looking for something fun? Brides? Cancer patients? Men?

There are many possibilities and each person is looking for something different. They will have different worries and use different languages as well. When you know your customers well you can speak directly to them. That will draw them into your social media feed and ultimately into your salon.

Use gorgeous images

A block of words can look boring, but a beautiful picture will catch your audience’s eye as they scroll past. You don’t need an expensive camera to take good pictures, a mobile phone will do the job. Just pay attention to things like lighting and keeping the background neutral. Use this as an opportunity to show off your best work – before and after pictures are always popular!

You might also want to use a website like Canva. You can give your pictures a frame in your brand colours and even add your logo. That way your images are always unmistakably yours.

Increase engagement

When you promote your salon on social media it helps to increase engagement wherever you can. Engagement is all the times that people interact with your post. Things like comments, likes or shares. If a platform sees that lots of people have engaged with your post it will assume it’s of interest. The algorithms will then keep showing it to more people. Engagement isn’t the only thing to worry about, but it’s worth paying attention to.

You can encourage people to comment on your posts by asking them questions, running polls and asking for suggestions. Questions are also a great way to learn more about your audience!

Share testimonials

The only thing more powerful than your own words is those of a delighted customer! Some social media platforms allow people to leave you a review, and others don’t. Either way, you can screenshot texts and messages, or take photos of written reviews to share. You could even copy and paste the review into Canva to create a beautiful, sharable image.

Ask for tags

Another way to get your clients to help promote you is to ask them to “check-in” or use your location tag while at the salon. You could even offer a small discount for those who do! Once they leave the salon you could ask them to tag you in any photos they share to show off their gorgeous new hair.

The beauty of this approach is that all their friends will see you. Your followers will be able to see that you have lots of happy customers as well!
